About BDL

A family-run lab, nearly five decades on

Bridge Dental Laboratory has been making custom dental appliances from Christchurch, Dorset since 1978 — three generations in the same family, DAMAS-accredited, MHRA-registered, and still doing the work by hand where it counts and with the best of modern digital where it doesn't.

How we got here

BDL opened its doors in 1978 as a small family business making custom appliances for local dental practices on the south coast. Nearly fifty years later we're still in the same family — now in our third generation — and still operating from our base in Christchurch, Dorset.

Plenty has changed in the work itself. The fundamentals — accurate impressions or scans in, precisely made appliances out — haven't. What has changed is the technology around it: where everything was once cast, packed and hand-finished, we now use intraoral scans and CAD software for the planning and design stages, then pair that with traditional hand-finishing for the parts that still benefit from a technician's eye.

That shift wasn't reluctant. We've invested heavily in digital workflows over the last decade — direct scanner inboxes with every major brand, in-house 3D printing for free models with every appliance, and CAD-led design for orthodontic, snoring and bruxism cases. The hand-craft is still there because hand-craft still makes the difference; the digital is there because it makes the lab faster, more accurate and easier to work with.

Some of our customers have been sending us cases for more than twenty years. We take that seriously. The relationships are what the business is really built on.

The lab itself

We're based in a purpose-fitted unit on the Sea Vixen Industrial Estate in Christchurch, Dorset. The lab houses our scan, CAD and design stations, a dedicated 3D printing area for models, traditional plaster and pressing benches, and the finishing area where most of the hand work happens.

Every appliance moves through the same documented workflow — receipt, processing, design, manufacture, finishing, QC, dispatch — with records kept at every stage. That's not just good practice; it's required by our DAMAS accreditation, which is independently audited every year.

What our credentials mean for you

DAMAS — the Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audit Scheme — is the industry's quality management standard for custom-made dental appliances. An independent auditor visits us every single year to verify our processes. If we don't meet the standard, we lose the accreditation; it's ongoing.

MHRA — the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency — is the UK government body that regulates medical devices. We're registered as a manufacturer of custom-made medical devices under registration number 8542.

How we work behind the scenes

The standards that keep us accredited.

Independent annual audit

A third-party DAMAS auditor inspects our lab every year. The accreditation has to be re-earned each cycle.

GDC-registered technicians

Every technician on our bench is registered with the General Dental Council and holds a recognised qualification in dental technology.

Continuous training

Ongoing CPD and new-technology training — from digital workflow updates to the latest material systems.
