You Don't Need to Buy Your Scanner Through a Lab — Here's Why (and Which to Choose)

If you’ve looked into going digital, you’ve probably been offered a scanner “through a lab” — free or heavily subsidised, on the condition you send that lab a set number of cases each month. It sounds generous. In practice it’s the beginning of a tie-in, and it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re signing up for before you do.

We take a different view. We’d rather earn your work every month because our fit, turnaround and service are good — not because a finance agreement obliges you to send it. So here’s an honest guide to buying your own scanner, and how to choose one.

What a “scanner through a lab” really costs

There’s no such thing as a free scanner. When a lab provides one at little or no upfront cost, the cost is recovered somewhere — and usually it’s recovered through you being locked in. The typical strings attached:

A minimum monthly case commitment — send fewer cases than agreed and you pay a penalty, or the deal unwinds.
Per-case pricing that quietly carries the hardware cost — you may be paying more per unit than you would with an independent lab, for years.
A contract term measured in years, not months — so if the lab’s quality slips, you’re stuck.
A workflow tied to that lab — sometimes a scanner configured to make sending work elsewhere harder than it should be.

None of that is illegal or even unusual. But it means the moment you’re unhappy, you can’t simply take your work elsewhere — which rather defeats the point of a lab having to keep you happy.

Our stance: use us by choice, not by contract

Why buying your own is usually the better deal

Owning your scanner outright — or on your own finance rather than a lab’s — almost always works out better:

You own the asset. It’s yours to keep, sell, or move between sites, and it can be written down against tax as capital equipment (check with your accountant).
You control the case flow. Send every case to whichever lab does the best job of it, and change your mind whenever you like.
You can negotiate. Buying direct from a manufacturer or distributor — especially at trade shows or end of quarter — you can often secure a better overall price than the “bundled into per-case fees” route, with no strings.
Your data stays yours. The scans are a permanent clinical record you own, not something held inside a lab’s system.

The one rule when you buy: keep it open

The single most important feature is not accuracy — every modern scanner on this list is comfortably within clinical tolerance for crown and bridge work. It’s open export. Choose a scanner that exports open STL/PLY files and you can send cases to any lab, including us. Closed ecosystems that make export awkward or route everything through one platform are just a subtler version of lock-in.

The second thing to watch is total cost of ownership. A cheap or “free” wand can cost a fortune over five years once you add mandatory subscriptions and single-use scanner tips. Always compare the five-year running cost, not just the sticker price.

The scanners, most expensive to budget

Prices below are indicative guide bands (ex-VAT); always get a current UK quote, as distributor deals and finance vary widely.

Premium (guide: ~£28,000–40,000)

Dentsply Sirona Primescan 2 — cloud-native, wireless, class-leading accuracy, and the standard-setter if you want true same-day chairside milling with CEREC. Open export via DS Core.
iTero Lumina (Align) — very fast full-arch scans, a compact wand, and unique NIRI caries detection (spot interproximal caries without X-rays). Purpose-built for the Invisalign pipeline. Watch the total cost: it relies on single-use tips and a subscription, so five-year running costs are among the highest.
3Shape TRIOS 5 — the deepest software ecosystem and broad, open lab choice. A superb all-rounder for practices doing mixed orthodontic and restorative work.
Planmeca Emerald S — light, fast and reliable, strong if you’re already in the Planmeca equipment ecosystem.

Mid-range (guide: ~£14,000–22,000)

Medit i900 / i700 — the value-to-performance champion for lab work: fully open STL export, a very light wand, and a genuinely useful free app bundle (design, splints, smile design, crown fit) with no scanner subscription. Our most-recommended starting point for practices that mainly want great scans to send out.
Dexis IS 3800 — a robust, open, well-supported workhorse.
Straumann Virtuo Vivo — light, comfortable and open, popular with implant-focused practices.
Shining 3D Aoralscan 3 — reliable and open, at a keen price — where mid-range meets budget.

Budget (guide: ~£7,000–13,000)

Launca DL-300 / DL-206 — a lot of scanner for the money, open export, a common sensible entry point.
Shining 3D Aoralscan Elf — one of the most affordable clinically capable wands available, open files.
AlliedStar AS 100 — budget, open, and one of the brands we already work with.
Panda / Runyes / Fussen — value scanners that will get a clean, usable scan to your lab; check warranty, support and (again) that export is open before you commit.

Which should you choose?

Mostly sending work to a lab? A mid-range open scanner like Medit gives you 90% of the premium experience for a fraction of the five-year cost.
Same-day chairside dentistry? Primescan 2 with CEREC.
Invisalign-led practice? iTero is built for it — just budget for the running costs.
Watching every pound? A Shining 3D, Launca or AlliedStar will send us perfectly good cases.
