Custom Whitening Trays vs Boil-and-Bite: Why Lab-Made Trays Deliver Better Results

By Bridge Dental Laboratory · 14 July 2026

Whitening is one of the most requested treatments in general practice, and the tray is what separates a bright, even result from a patchy one with sore gums. Off-the-shelf boil-and-bite trays are tempting on price, but they routinely let gel leak onto the gingiva and whiten unevenly. Lab-made trays fix both problems. At Bridge Dental Laboratory our whitening trays are supersealed, scalloped, and fitted with gel reservoirs as standard.

Here is why that specification matters.

The problem with boil-and-bite

A generic tray is not made for your patient’s arch. It sits loosely, so gel migrates onto the gums and causes irritation — the number one reason patients abandon whitening. A loose tray also holds gel unevenly against the teeth, giving blotchy results and white spots. And because there is no defined gingival margin, the patient often ends up with sensitivity where the gel pools.

What “supersealed, scalloped, reservoir” actually means

  • Supersealed: the tray is finished to hug the teeth closely, so gel stays where it belongs — on the enamel — and does not seep onto soft tissue.
  • Scalloped: the tray edge is trimmed to follow the gum line precisely, keeping gel off the gingiva and reducing irritation.
  • Gel reservoirs: small built-in spaces hold an even, controlled film of gel against each tooth surface, so whitening is consistent across the arch rather than concentrated where the tray happens to press hardest.

Together, those three features are the difference between a patient who whitens comfortably and evenly, and one who stops after two nights because their gums are sore.

Better results, fewer complaints

Custom trays mean the patient uses less gel to better effect, experiences far less gingival irritation, and gets an even shade change they are actually happy with. For your practice, that means fewer follow-up calls, better before-and-after photos, and a patient who trusts you with their next cosmetic decision.

The workflow is simple

Send us a digital scan or an impression and we will make trays fitted precisely to your patient’s arches, ready to load with your choice of gel. From a scan we can begin work within minutes, and the fit is far more accurate than anything a patient can achieve over a saucepan of hot water.

Offer whitening the right way

If you are offering whitening, the tray should not be the weak link. Lab-made, sealed, scalloped, reservoir trays cost a little more than a boil-and-bite kit and deliver a result that reflects well on your practice.
