Diagnostic Wax-Ups: Show Patients the Result Before You Pick Up a Drill

By Bridge Dental Laboratory · 30 July 2026

The hardest part of a larger case is rarely the dentistry — it’s getting the patient to say yes to treatment they can’t picture. Describe a six-unit rehabilitation in words and you get a nervous “let me think about it.” Show the same patient a wax-up of their finished smile and the conversation changes entirely. A diagnostic wax-up is the single most effective case-acceptance tool most practices under-use, and at Bridge Dental Laboratory we produce them from your scan or impression.

What a diagnostic wax-up actually is

A diagnostic wax-up is a physical (or digital) model of the proposed final result, built up on a copy of the patient’s current dentition. It shows exactly what the teeth will look like after treatment — the shape, the proportions, the corrected midline, the closed spaces — before a single tooth is touched. It turns an abstract plan into something the patient can hold, see and understand.

Why it wins case acceptance

People buy what they can see. A patient weighing up several thousand pounds of restorative work is being asked to trust a description; a wax-up replaces that leap of faith with evidence. When they can see the outcome sitting on the model — or previewed in their own mouth via a mock-up taken from the wax-up — hesitation turns into confidence. Practices that present wax-ups routinely report noticeably higher acceptance on exactly the high-value cases where it matters most.

It also protects you. A patient who has seen and approved the planned result up front is far less likely to be surprised at the end. The wax-up becomes a shared, agreed reference point for what “done” looks like.

It’s also your blueprint

The value doesn’t stop at the sales conversation. A wax-up is a working document for the treatment itself:

  • Provisionals and mock-ups — a clear matrix taken from the wax-up lets you produce accurate temporaries and an intra-oral mock-up chairside, so the patient can trial the new look.
  • A preparation guide — the wax-up shows how much space the plan needs, guiding your reduction so you prepare conservatively rather than guessing.
  • A communication tool — it aligns you, the patient and the lab on the same end point, which means fewer surprises and fewer remakes when the definitive work comes back.

We can also make a clear stent or matrix from the wax-up, so the plan carries straight through from presentation into the clinical stages.

The digital workflow

The easiest way to order a wax-up is digitally. Send us an intraoral scan from any of the 14+ scanners we support, along with what you want to achieve — the teeth to be treated, the result you’re aiming for, and any photographs that help us judge the aesthetics. We return the diagnostic wax-up as a model you can show the patient, ready to take a matrix from. No impressions to post, no distortion, and we can begin work as soon as your scan arrives.

Pricing

Wax-ups are priced in simple packages by the number of units involved, with an optional stent to carry the design into your provisionals. Tell us the case and we’ll tell you exactly what it costs — no surprises.
