Will cleaning damage or bleach my dentures?

No. Ultrasonic cleaning is non-abrasive, so it won't scratch the acrylic or wear down the teeth the way hard scrubbing can. It lifts stains to restore the denture's natural colour — it doesn't bleach or change the shade of the acrylic itself.

How often should dentures be professionally cleaned?

There's no fixed rule — it depends on diet, staining and how quickly deposits build up. Many people have it done whenever staining, tartar or odour appears that home cleaning can't shift. If you smoke or drink a lot of tea, coffee or red wine, you'll likely need it more often.

You can brush a denture every day and it can still look dull, feel rough or carry a faint smell. That’s because home cleaning has limits: brushing and soaking keep a denture tidy day to day, but they can’t shift the deposits that build up over months and years. A professional clean removes what home care leaves behind — and it does more for the look, feel and hygiene of a denture than most people expect.

What builds up on a denture

Dentures collect the same deposits as natural teeth, plus a few of their own:

Tartar (calculus) — plaque that has hardened into a chalky mineral crust. Once it sets, a toothbrush won’t remove it.
Deep staining — tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco gradually soak into the acrylic, which is slightly porous. The colour goes deeper than the surface.
Plaque and biofilm — a living layer of bacteria that clings to every surface, especially the fitting side against the gums.
Odour-causing bacteria and fungi — the same biofilm is what makes a denture smell, and left unchecked it’s linked to sore, inflamed gums (denture stomatitis).

Why home cleaning can’t shift it

Daily brushing and an overnight soak are exactly right for day-to-day care — but they have two limits. They can’t dissolve hardened tartar or draw out stains that have already soaked in, and the temptation to fix that with hard scrubbing or abrasive toothpaste only scratches the acrylic, creating more crevices for bacteria to hide in. You can keep a denture maintained at home; you can’t fully restore it.

Rinse it after meals and brush it gently with a soft brush — a denture brush or soft toothbrush, not abrasive toothpaste.
Soak it as directed in a denture-cleaning solution.
Keep it in cool water when out of the mouth (unlike a hard night guard, most dentures shouldn’t be allowed to dry out) — and never use hot water, which can distort the fit.
