The choice of retainer and retention regime, and responsibility for it, rests entirely with the treating dentist or orthodontist exercising their own clinical judgement, in line with their GDC obligations and knowledge of the patient.

What the retainer picker weighs up

Three quick questions narrow the five retainers we make down to a shortlist to discuss — based on how the retainer should stay in, what matters most, and anything unusual about the patient.

    Retention

    Removable or fixed. Choosing bonded-in points straight to a fixed retainer, supplied with a custom seating jig.

    Priority

    An invisible everyday retainer (Essix), maximum durability and stain resistance (Zendura A), comfort with flex and grip (Zendura FLX), or filling a gap from a missing tooth (a retainer with a pontic).

  3. 3

    Patient factors

    Grinding or clenching, a high relapse risk, comfort for a first-time wearer, or a standard case — each nudges the shortlist.
