Custom vs Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: What to Tell Your Patients
When a patient asks whether a custom gumshield is really worth it over a £10 boil-and-bite from the sports shop, the honest answer is yes — and it comes down to four things: fit, protection, lifespan and whether they’ll actually wear it.
Fit
A custom mouthguard is made from an impression or scan of the patient’s own teeth, so it seats snugly and stays put. A boil-and-bite is softened in hot water and bitten into at home, which rarely produces an even, accurate fit. The result is a guard that’s bulky, moves around, and gets pushed out or chewed during play.
Protection
Protection depends on a guard being the right thickness in the right places and staying where it should during impact. A custom guard is laminated to a controlled, even thickness and holds its position. A loose or thin boil-and-bite can’t spread force the same way — and a guard that isn’t in place when the knock comes protects nothing.
Lifespan
Custom guards are made from dental-grade material that holds its shape season after season. A boil-and-bite thins and distorts with wear and re-moulding, so it needs replacing far more often — which erodes the price saving people think they’re making.
Whether they’ll wear it
This is the one people forget. A bulky, ill-fitting guard that makes it hard to breathe or talk ends up in the kit bag, not the mouth. A comfortable custom guard — especially one in a design or colour the patient chose — actually gets worn, which is the only thing that matters.
