Snoreguards Explained: Silensor-SL, MSi and Fused Mandibular Advancement Devices
Snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnoea are areas where general dentistry can genuinely change a patient’s quality of life — and their partner’s. A mandibular advancement device (MAD) holds the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, opening the airway and reducing or stopping the snore. But “a snoreguard” is not one appliance: the design you choose affects adjustability, comfort and how well the patient tolerates it. At Bridge Dental Laboratory we make three types — Silensor-SL, MSi, and fused.
Here is how to choose.
First, know your limits
Dental sleep appliances are appropriate for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. Anyone with suspected significant sleep apnoea should be assessed and, where needed, diagnosed through the appropriate medical pathway before you fit a device. With that clinical governance in place, a MAD is a comfortable, well-evidenced option.
Silensor-SL
The Silensor-SL uses two connector bars that link the upper and lower splints and control the degree of advancement. It allows free lateral movement, so many patients find it comfortable, and the amount of protrusion can be adjusted by changing the connectors. It is a well-established, reliable choice for straightforward snoring cases where you want proven comfort.
MSi
The MSi is designed for adjustability, letting you titrate the advancement in steps to find the position that controls the snoring with the least protrusion. That incremental control is useful for patients who need a more precise setting, or where you expect to fine-tune over a few appointments to balance airway opening against jaw comfort.
Fused
A fused device joins the upper and lower elements into a single appliance set at a defined advancement. It is robust and simple, with fewer components to manage — a good option where you have already established the working protrusion and want a durable, uncomplicated device.
Choosing between them
- Proven comfort, free jaw movement: Silensor-SL.
- Fine, incremental titration: MSi.
- Simple, robust, fixed advancement: fused.
Good retention is essential for all three — a device that dislodges overnight does nothing — which is why an accurate fit matters. A digital scan gives us the precision to make a device that stays put and stays comfortable.
